Going out for a cup of coffee and a chocolate donut now and then has become one of my favorite morning rituals. Of course, nowadays, going out for coffee is not all that easy. This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a warm donut at home, and that means you must make them. Isn’t that fun?
Yes, making donuts at home is possible. It might not be a piece of cake, but it isn’t hard either. Here’s how you do it.
The secret behind perfect donuts is a firm dough, and you make it with all-purpose flour, yeast, milk, sugar, eggs and butter. In fact, milk is basically our only liquid, and that’s what we want, a thick dough you can shape and fry without falling apart.
Now, what’s a donut without the right glaze? Once you fry your donuts and let them cool down and coat them with cinnamon and sugar, cover them in a glossy sugar glace, or a crackly chocolate layer. For me, it’s chocolate all the way, so I melt the dark chocolate and mix it with instant coffee for one tasty donut. Let the chocolate harden while you make yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy a coffee shop-quality breakfast!
Heat the milk in the microwave until steamy and combine it in a bowl with the sugar and salt. Set aside.

Hydrate the dry yeast in the warm water and add it to the flour mixture.
Use an electric hand mixer to mix well and incorporate the butter in cubes. Add the egg.
Transfer the donut dough into a clean bowl and cover with a kitchen towel; let it sit for 30 minutes at room temperature.
Flour a surface and roll the dough until one-half inch thick.
Use a donut cutter to cut 12 donuts.
Heat the frying oil and fry the donuts in batches.
Set them aside on a cooling rack.
Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and mix the instant coffee. Dip each donut. As a garnish, allow the chocolate to harden and drizzle the donuts with extra melted chocolate.
