If the thought of a thick, creamy and lusciously sweet milkshake sip doesn’t take you to your fondest childhood memories, then there’s something wrong with you. No, really. Milkshakes are evocative of good times. They’re celebratory in a way, a treat to indulge your guiltiest pleasures.
Milkshakes go back to the late 1800s and were popularized in the early 1920s. Ice cream and milk, that’s all you need to craft this thick, palate-coating drink, and one hundred years later, milkshakes are as popular as ever.
As you already know, milkshakes come in all colors and flavors. Chocolate syrup will make one good chocolate milkshake, and you can use fruit syrup, caramel sauce or butterscotch for other exciting versions. For me, the best milkshakes are flavored with coffee.
I won’t lie. Putting together today’s recipe was no easy feat. I was determined to give my milkshake the purest coffee flavor, and it didn’t always go the way I planned.
I know I was using coffee-flavored ice cream, but I needed something else. Regular coffee didn’t make the cut, and a creamy shot of espresso diluted the milkshake too much, even when cooled beforehand.
Finally, I discovered that a teaspoon of freeze-dried coffee, AKA high-quality instant coffee, took my milkshake to new pleasurable heights. That’s how this recipe came to be, and now I’m happy to share it with you.
So, you’ll need coffee ice cream, the good stuff, instant coffee – if premium, much better – and milk. Blending them is all you need to do, and the result is astounding. I also discovered you could adjust the thickness while blending by adding a little more ice cream or less milk. We all like our milkshakes in a certain way, and there’s plenty of room for personalization.
Here’s a final tip. Turn your coffee milkshake into a mocha milkshake with a drizzle of chocolate syrup; you won’t regret it. And, of course, a hefty addition of whipped cream doesn’t hurt.
I’m quite happy with this recipe, and I’m sure it will bring you as much pleasure as it does to me. Share it with your friends and family, and let’s show the coffee milkshake some love! It’s time for coffee to dominate the milkshake market, am I right?
In a blender, add the ice cream, instant coffee and milk. Blend until smooth.
Pour into your glass and top with whipped cream.
