Do some kinds of coffee have more caffeine than others?

In many countries, coffee is the second most popular drink, right after water. People simply love coffee. Some drink it because they enjoy the taste, while others care more about the energy kick they get out of it.

No wonder many people want to know if some types of coffee have more caffeine than others. This depends on several factors – the type of coffee, the roast grade or the way the brew is prepared.

Arabica or Robusta - which has more caffeine?

There are two main types of coffee cultivated around the world today – Arabica and Robusta. Arabica accounts for 75% of the world’s total coffee production and is considered to be superior to Robusta. Prized for its smoother taste, Arabica has a lower caffeine content than Robusta coffee, which has a harsher taste.

Robusta has a 2,7% caffeine content, double than Arabica coffee, which has only 1,5% caffeine.

Which roast has the most caffeine?

Let’s start by debunking the myth that dark roasts pack more caffeine – that is not true.

On the contrary, light roasts offer you a bigger energy boost. As they are roasted less, light coffee beans are denser and heavier than dark beans which lose more water as they are roasted at higher temperatures for a longer time.

As a result, when ground, light roast particles contain more caffeine than dark roast ones. If you put two tablespoons of light roast coffee in your coffee maker you will get a stronger coffee than using a dark roast.

Does espresso have more caffeine than coffee?

This is another myth. Many people believe an espresso has more caffeine than one cup of drip coffee, but we’ve got the numbers to prove this is not the case.

A standard shot of espresso (1.5 oz) has around 90 – 100 mg of caffeine, whereas a cup of drip coffee (6 oz) has about 120 – 130 mg of caffeine. So, if you didn’t get much sleep the night before you’re better off with regular coffee.

You would get a lot more caffeine if you drank 6 oz of concentrated espresso, but we do not recommend it. That much caffeine in a single serving could lead to dangerous health consequences.

What is the strongest coffee in the world?

Those who really want to get a great kick out of their coffee should try Biohazard Coffee, the world’s strongest coffee. One 12oz serving of Biohazard Coffee gives you a whooping 928 mg of caffeine. Wow!

Death Wish Coffee also claims to be the strongest coffee in the world, although its product has about the same caffeine per fluid oz as espresso. Again, it’s a question of serving size.

If you drink a 12 oz cup of Death Wish Coffee you get 4.5 times more caffeine than you would from a 2 oz. espresso.

Or you could drink several shots of espresso

All in all, for a nice strong cup of coffee, you could try a lighter roast which packs more caffeine or change to Robusta, and put up with the bitter taste. It’s entirely up to you!
