You might have also realized that not all coffee cakes are created equal. Some are just a bit richer and mouth-watering. They’re made with sour cream, and that makes all the difference. Really, one ingredient completely changes any cake’s personality.

Actually, you need not add a lot of sour cream to give your coffee cake a bit more personality; actually, I use less than a cup for an entire loaf. It does make a significant difference, though, so I’m pretty sure you’ll love the recipe below.

This is one of my most reliable coffee cake recipes, you can’t go wrong with this one, and it’s handy for when you’re in a hurry. It takes less than an hour, and I guarantee you already have all you need at home. If not, every ingredient is available everywhere, literally.

Our dry ingredients are flour, sugar, baking powder and a pinch of salt. The wet ingredients are butter, sour cream, an egg and vanilla extract. Just put it all together and bake the mixture! Baking a cake made easy.

Of course, the best part is the crumbly and cinnamon streusel topping; it’s what makes coffee cakes instantly recognizable. We’re making it from scratch in just two minutes. How cool is that?

Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease an 8×8 inch baking pan.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

In a second mixing bowl, combine the butter, sour cream, egg and vanilla extract.

Using a stand mixer, combine the flour mixture with the wet ingredient mixture until a batter forms.

Pour the batter into the greased baking pan.

To make the crumble topping, mix the flour, brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl and slowly incorporate the butter. Top the cake mixture with the crumble.

Bake for 30 minutes or until cooked through. Insert a wood pick to make sure the center
is fully cooked.
