Green tea is super trendy right now, especially matcha, and that’s incredible, considering the powdered green tea has been around for hundreds and even thousands of years!
I guess it is the health craze we’re living that brought the super healthy tea to the mainstream, and I’m glad it happened because we should all drink green tea more often — it’s an authentic superfood and has the loveliest herbal flavours.
Do you know what else? Green tea has caffeine, just like coffee, and it is said our bodies absorb it better from tea than from coffee. Some people say you don’t even get a caffeine crash like it happens when you abuse our favorite dark brew.
Although all the big companies now have some kind of green tea specialty drink, my favorite is the one from Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. What a treat! Creamy, slightly sweet, subtlety infused with vanilla, and super refreshing. What’s not to love?
For this recipe, we’re using matcha powdered green tea and coffee creamer. This will emulate CF&TL’s green tea powder. We’re blending it with lots of ice and non-fat milk. Then, of course, a few drops of vanilla will take the drink to the next level — everything tastes better with vanilla, right?
Last but not least, we’ll need whipped cream as a garnish which you can also fold with a little more matcha for a green whipped cream. Matcha is a bit bitter, so you might need to adjust the sweetness, both in the whipped cream and in the drink in general, but it’s no biggy.
It comes without saying you can substitute the milk for any non-animal milk alternative to make this drink vegan-oriented. It ends up lighter too, and I know lots of you appreciate that. I know I do!
A final tip? Add an espresso shot to your drink to amp-up its caffeine boost; you won’t regret it. If you do add coffee, make sure you cool it down beforehand; otherwise, it will melt the ice and dilute the drink.

In a blender, add the ice, sugar, vanilla extract, matcha, coffee creamer and milk. Blend until smooth.
Serve and top with whipped cream.
