No one really knows when or where did the Star Wars Darth Vader Frappuccino come to be. It was probably around the release of the very many movies and series the franchise has released over the past few decades.
What we do know is that the Darth Vader Frappuccino is one of the most popular items on Starbucks’ secret menu. So, can we make ours at home? Sure we can!
What makes a Frappuccino a Darth Vader is the color — it’s dark as grown-up Anakin Skywalker’s soul. We’ll achieve that signature black hue using espresso, instant coffee and chocolate syrup.
For some reason, the authentic Darth Vader Frappuccino is topped with whipped cream and crushed walnuts, which has nothing to do with the franchise’s character. Still, we absolutely love the topping combination, so we’re throwing in our own crushed nuts.
For this recipe, you’ll need a strong shot of espresso. If it’s a medium to dark roast Arabica-Robusta blend, even better. We want the coffee to be as intense as coffee gets.
We’re also adding a teaspoon of instant coffee to help with the color and the intense coffee flavor. The force is strong in this one.
Finally, there’s the chocolate syrup — that’s our sweetener, but also a natural coloring agent and flavoring. Think of this specialty as a mocha Frappuccino on steroids, or are they midi-chlorians?
With a cup of fresh ice, the tasty whipped cream and crushed nuts and the blender in hand, nothing can stop us from conquering this Starbucks secret item.
Make sure you brew a fine-quality espresso. The quality matters. Also, make sure you cool the coffee before adding it to the blender, or it will melt the ice and dilute the drink.
Blend until icy and frothy, but don’t overdo it. You want to keep those ice shards intact. Over-blending the Frappuccino will result in a watered-down, dull frapp. Let’s bring the Starbucks Star Wars Darth Vader Frappuccino to life — the father of all icy coffee drinks.
Brew the espresso and cool it down in an ice bath.
In a blender, add the ice, espresso, instant coffee, milk and chocolate syrup and blend until smooth.
Serve in a glass and top with whipped cream. Drizzle with chocolate syrup and sprinkle the crushed nuts.
