If you’re new to single-serve brewing, then you must be confused about how the terms coffee pods and K-cups seem to be used interchangeably. So, are K-cups and coffee pods really the same thing? Or are they different?
Well, there is truth in both, and here is why. Because all K-cups are coffee pods, but not all coffee pods are K-cups.
The first invented – coffee pod is actually coffee that is packed inside a paper filter, for more convenient brewing.
K-cups, as you well may know, are the plastic cartridges in which the coffee grounds are sealed. These capsules are lined with a filter so that the coffee stays intact during the process of brewing.
So, basically, a K-cup is considered to be a coffee pod – a sealed serving of ground coffee. But when we say coffee pod, then we’re talking about a very different package.
The K-Cup, trademarked by Keurig Green Mountain, can be easily detected thanks to their capsule-like look. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be made by Keurig. Today, many different brands offer varieties of K-cups that are compatible with the Keurig single-serving machines.

You would be forgiven for thinking that each Keurig pod was packed with instant coffee that just had water forced through them to brew the perfect cup. The reality is that each Keurig cup is packed with ground coffee and a nifty filter making it a convenient filtered coffee.
The simple answer is one 6-ounce cup of coffee. Again, this depends on how strong you like your coffee and it is possible to make two weaker cups of coffee out of one Keurig pod, but ideally, each pod has enough coffee grounds to make one strong cup of coffee.
It is not possible to use coffee pods in a Keurig machine without buying an adapter or buying a machine that has been manufactured to accept both coffee pods and Keurig cups. This is because coffee pods are made of pliable filter paper containing coffee grounds whereas a Keurig cup is made of plastic that is punctured by needles in the machine to allow the brewed coffee to flow out of the cup.
The easiest way to do this is to buy a reusable K-cup and fill it up with coffee grounds of your choice. Additionally, the more adventurous coffee drinker can re-use an old Keurig cup by washing out the old coffee grounds, topping it off with your own choice and sealing the cup with a piece of aluminum foil.
According to manufacturer guidelines, each Keurig coffee cup should only be used once to brew the most consistent cup of coffee. However, if you enjoy a weaker cup of coffee, it is possible to brew a larger cup of coffee using a single pod, thereby getting more bang for your buck!
