Buying Guide & FAQ

How to Use Your Espresso Machine

If you haven’t made an authentic espresso before, then pulling the perfect shot may seem like rocket science. The truth? Nowhere near that complicated. All that separates you from enjoying a rich and smooth espresso are just a few simple steps. And here they are:

#1 – Fill the reservoir with water. Every espresso machine has a water tank. Fill it up, but be careful not to go over the labeled line.

#2 – Turn the machine on. Your espresso maker may require a few moments to preheat, so wait for the light on the maker to indicate that it is brew-ready.

#3 – Take the portafilter out by removing it from the spout. You will notice that there is a shot basket inside – this is where your coffee goes. Add the required amount of ground espresso coffee.

#4 – Use the tamper. An espresso tamper is a small device used to push down the ground coffee. With the tamper, you squeeze the grounds of coffee together, so that the result is a rich and strong espresso shot. So, grab the temper and push down on the coffee until the grounds are compressed well.

#5 – Return the portafilter. For you to brew your coffee, the portafilter needs to be locked onto the head of the machine. So push the portafilter underneath the spout firmly. Most machines require a slight twist for the lock to happen.

#6 – Place your cup or carafe underneath the spout.

#7 – Press the button, wait for your preferred brew size, and enjoy.

Benefits of Using an Espresso Machine

There are a lot of reasons why you should have a real espresso machine in your home:

Better Latte – If you are into making lattes (and I assume you are since you are reading this article), then having an espresso machine will help you achieve a better taste. Espresso shots made without an authentic machine are less exact since a decent shot depends on the absolute precision of temperature and pressure. Alternative brewing will only weaken the richness.

Convenient and Time-Saving – Okay, how many times has it happened for your uninvited guests to wait and wait for your pot of drip coffee to fill? With an espresso machine, you can serve them a cup in less than a couple of minutes.

Save Money – They might be a more costly investment at first, but in the long run, espresso machines can save you tons of money. Just think about all the trips to the coffee shop, non taken.

Variety – Drip coffee is a drip coffee. And besides for adding milk or cream to it, there is not much you can do to up your coffee-drinking experience. With espresso, the game is more dynamic. Having an espresso machine at home means that you have endless specialty drinks at your fingertips. Espresso, Americano, Latte, Mocha, Cappuccino, Macchiato, are some of the most popular options.

How to Achieve Perfect Frothed Milk

If latte is your pick-me-up choice, then it is understandable why achieving the ideal froth is of such a great significance. It may seem barista-grade hard (which is partially true), but frothing your milk to perfection is possible. It mainly depends on this factors:

The Right Type of Milk – For richest and creamiest froth, use fresh, cold and full fat milk. Of course, you can use skim milk if you prefer, but the result will be airy, lighter, and without the recognizable thickness that latte foam should have.

Temperature – The whole point of frothing the milk is to get a creamy texture. And to do that, you need to increase the milk’s sweetness. And milk’s the sweetest at about 135 to 150 degrees F. Go higher than that, and you’ll end up scalding it.

Position of the Wand – The steam tip has to be perfectly positioned into the surface of the milk. For best results, place the tip of the steam wand just below the milk’s surface. Go lower and you will not give the milk enough air. Go higher, and you will probably turn your kitchen into a giant milky mess due to too much air.

Practice – Remember, practice makes perfect. You may need to go through a few quarts of milk to produce the perfect texture. But the creamy result will be so worth it.

How to Make a Latte

A latte is a coffee made with 1/3 of espresso and 2/3 of steamed milk with velvety froth. The first key to making a latte is filling a third of a cup with espresso coffee.

The next step is to have steamed milk to pour over the coffee. Fill your pitcher with cold milk (remember, you need to add more milk than what you need to pour over the coffee), and place the steam wand just below the surface. Start frothing. For beginners, use a thermometer to know when the ideal temperature is achieved. For a bit more experienced latte makers, you can gauge this by placing your hand on the outside of the pitcher.

For the perfect texture, you need to get rid of any bubbles of air. Start by moving the pitcher in quick circular motions so that the milk foam is spinning and aerating. Now, tap the pitcher onto a flat surface a couple of times, and voila – you are ready to pour!

How to Make a Latte Without an Espresso Machine

Although it may not be the richest and creamiest latte you’ve ever tasted, you can still enjoy a decent cup of smooth and milky coffee even without an espresso machine. All you need is a mason jar and a microwave. Okay, and brewed coffee!

  1. Grab a mason jar that is safe to go into the microwave and fill one-third of it with milk.
  2. Seal it tightly.
  3. Start shaking the jar up and down until you end up doubling the milk amount.
  4. Take the lid off and place the mason jar, uncovered, in your microwave.
  5. Heat on high for approximately 35-40 seconds. Keep an eye on the foam while microwaving. It should have risen near the top, but it should not be bubbling over.
  6. Fill 1/3 of a cup with brewed coffee.
  7. Pour the steamed, frothy milk over. Enjoy!

Espresso Machine Cleaning

Even the best grounds of beans will mean nothing if they get mixed up with gunk from your dirty espresso machine. For the taste to be flavorful and a rich crema to sit on top of your espresso, the path of coffee extraction has to be clean. And for that to happen, daily maintenance is required. Here is how you can keep your espresso machine clean every day:

  1. Remove the portafilter and take out its basket. With a nylon brush, scrub well to get rid of leftover coffee. Rinse with hot water and pat the parts dry.
  2. With the same brush, clean the gasket. Press the coffee brewing button to run water to rinse away remains. Wipe with a dry towel.
  3. Check the group’s underside and see if you can remove its screen. Wash it thoroughly, and wipe the interior clean.
  4. Sanitize the steam wand. You can do this by covering it with a damp towel, and then carefully turn it on for a couple of seconds. This should get rid of milk-protein remains.
  5. Wipe your machine clean and reassemble all the parts.
