Difference Between Coffee Pods and K-Cups

All K-Cups are coffee pods, but a coffee pod is not necessarily a K-Cup. Sounds confusing, I know, but the difference is pretty simple and, well, apparent.

When we say coffee pod (without adding the K-Cup part), chances are we are talking about those round, pliable packs of ground coffee trapped inside a paper coffee filter.

But when talking about a K-Cup coffee pod, then we refer to those tiny plastic cups with ground coffee sealed inside. You know, the ones that Keurig revolutionized.

What Coffee Pods are Compatible with Keurig?

Keurig coffee makers are compatible with Keurig K-Cup pods only. These coffee machines do not work with regular paper coffee pods.

Do All K-Cups Fit the Keurig?

All official K-Cup coffee pods licensed by Green Mountain should fit your K-Cup compatible Keurig machine (all makers on this list do). However, there are many K-Cup pods on the market, packaged by independent companies, as well.

These pods work with Keurig makers (after all, Keurig is the inventor of the K-Cup); however, there is a catch. Most Keurig models are designed to reject such generic cups. Do your due diligence before going wild, or take our advice and play it safe – stick to official K-Cups. There are tons of different flavors and intensities, and you will have no trouble finding your perfect match.

Is a Keurig Coffee Maker Worth It?

Well, it depends on how you look at it. If you cringe at the idea of drinking coffee from pods and cannot part with your French Press, then no – you will not find even the drip makers useful.

But, if you want convenience with a push of a button, consistency, and less time for brewing in the morning, then a Keurig is just what your Java routine needs.

Cleaning Your Keurig Coffee Maker

Besides the obvious wiping the exterior, rinsing the water reservoir, and making sure that no dust gets on the inside of your maker, from time to time, you will need a deeper cleaning method.

When mineral deposits claim their territory, it is time for descaling. And as complicated as that may sound, the process couldn’t be simpler:

  1. Remove the water tank (if removable) and fill 1/3-1/2 of it with white vinegar.
  2. Fill up the rest with clean water, and lock it in place.
  3. Without adding your K-Cup or ground coffee, run a full brewing cycle.
  4. Discard the vinegary water, rinse the tank, and fill it up with clean water.
  5. Run another brew cycle to get rid of the vinegary scent. If you have an overly sensitive sense of smell, you may decide to repeat this step once (or twice!) more.
  6. Use your maker as usual.

Conclusion

We can all agree that the choices are almost limitless when it comes to choosing a Keruig maker for your coffee-making practice. We only hope that we at least narrowed down your list of possible candidates. All of the Keurig models from this list bring heaps of value. The question is, which features do you find valuable?
